Nutrition - Placement

The NUT304 Nutrition Practicum, undertaken in the final year of your Bachelor of Nutrition, provides you with a structured work integrated learning experience. You will develop and apply knowledge, skills and competencies appropriate to professional nutrition practice. You will undertake supervised work integrated learning of at least 75 hours with a pre-determined organisation. Throughout your practicum you will conduct a nutrition project and reflect on your learning and practice. At the completion of your placement you will need to demonstrate skills that meet the Nutrition Science Competencies for Australian Undergraduate Students, whilst incorporating ethical and professional behaviour. NUT304 is offered both in Session 4 and Semester 2.

Placement essentials (Mandatory checks)

To be eligible to commence NUT304 Nutrition Practicum, students must complete the following Mandatory checks:

  • Blue Card
  • PrePlace Training (Canvas)
  • Placement Details Agreement (Available on Sonia Online 1-2 weeks prior to placement commencement date)
  • Student Disclosure Statement
  • Covid Screening form    
  • Pre-Placement workshop held the week prior to the allocated session commencing
  • Pre-requisite courses: NUT307 and enrolled in Program SC354.

NOTE: You will be granted full access to Sonia Online, once you have been enrolled into your program.

Uniforms

Students must wear a UniSC placement uniform shirt when completing placement activities.

How to purchase a UniSC placement uniform:

  • Order online from the MyPrint Shop and you can choose to collect from your local campus or deliver to your home address. Orders may take up to four weeks to arrive.

Placement allocation

The course coordinator will distribute an expression of interest form to all enrolled students in the month prior to the placement commencing. You will submit an expression of interest for your preferred three placement sites and outline what skills and attributes you have to enable you to complete the allocated project. The course coordinator and program coordinator will review expressions of interest and allocated students based on the weight of the submissions.

Remuneration and insurance

No remuneration or payment is made by the placement organisation to the students or to the University for hosting the student. Students undertaking an approved placement are covered by the University’s insurance policies.
