What is eVALU8?

The eVALU8 survey process (eVALU8) is one of the University’s key tools for gathering information about student satisfaction with courses and teaching. eVALU8 informs USC’s strategy for maintaining very high standards in teaching and curriculum design with the aim of improving student experiences of learning and teaching at the University.

eVALU8 provides a mechanism for you to provide feedback regarding the quality of key elements of a course and teaching within the course via a standardised survey instrument. Each eVALU8 survey includes the opportunity to provide written feedback about the course/s you have experienced.

Why should I complete eVALU8 surveys?

eVALU8 provides you with the opportunity to let the University know about your experience of the courses you have studied.

The University values your feedback which is used to review and improve student learning experiences and outcomes, making the University an even better place to study. Take a look at the You said, we listened web page to see how USC considers student responses to various surveys.

When are eVALU8 surveys conducted?

eVALU8 surveys are typically open for student completion two weeks prior to the end of a teaching period. In teaching periods which have a formal examination period, Image of USC staff in Have your say (HYS) t-shirtsthe eVALU8 surveys are open until one week after the conclusion of the examination period. For all other teaching periods, the surveys close one week after the conclusion of the teaching period.

The Course Coordinator receives the eVALU8 results after the official release of student grades for the related teaching period.

Keep a look out for the various promotions about the surveys including posters, social media posts and also staff wearing Have your say promotional t-shirts!

How do I access my eVALU8 surveys?

All eVALU8 surveys are conducted online. An email inviting you to complete your eVALU8 survey/s will be sent to your University email account. You will receive this email when eVALU8 surveys are open for the teaching period in which you are enrolled.

The email will be sent from eVALU8 (studentfeedback@usc.edu.au). Simply click on the link/s embedded in the email to complete your survey/s.

Alternatively, for a full list of surveys currently open for your completion, go to the eVALU8 survey links on Blackboard.

Why do I have multiple eVALU8 surveys to complete?

You will receive one eVALU8 survey for each course in which you are enrolled in any teaching period. If you are enrolled in more than one course, you will receive an eVALU8 survey for each course.

When completing eVALU8, be aware that each survey is specific to a course. The course code and name are highlighted throughout each eVALU8 survey, always check that your responses are relevant to that specific course.

When completing eVALU8 surveys, the response categories will always be from left to right (Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, Strongly Agree and Unable to judge). All five response categories are labelled in the eVALU8 surveys.

Can I see a full list of open eVALU8 surveys?

Yes, for a full list of eVALU8 surveys currently open for your completion, check the eVALU8 survey links on Blackboard. Click on the link and complete each open eVALU8 survey.

Once you complete an eVALU8 survey it will be removed from the list of open surveys the next time you log into Blackboard.

How long will it take to complete an eVALU8 survey?

Generally, the core part of the eVALU8 survey (seven quantitative items), will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. eVALU8 surveys also include the opportunity for you to provide written feedback, so the time taken to complete a survey may be extended depending on how much feedback you provide.

When and where can I do eVALU8 surveys?

During the evaluation period, you can complete eVALU8 anytime and anywhere that you have access to the internet. eVALU8 surveys are compatible with most mobile devices.

Can I do my eVALU8 surveys after I finish my assessments?

Yes, eVALU8 surveys remain open until one week after the conclusion of your teaching period's examination period (where relevant) or one week after the conclusion of the teaching period (where no examination period is specified). This enables you to complete the surveys once you have completed your assessment/s and to reflect on the full course/teaching experience.

Are all courses evaluated?

Courses with fewer than five enrolled students and other specific courses such as those completed overseas and thesis-based courses are excluded from the eVALU8 requirements as detailed in Section 6 of the Student Evaluation of Courses and Teaching – Procedures. Otherwise, eVALU8 surveys are released for each course in each teaching period.

For courses with fewer than five enrolled students, Course Coordinators will implement alternative strategies to collect student feedback.

What if I make a mistake when completing an eVALU8 survey?

When completing eVALU8 be aware that each survey is specific to a course. The course code and name are highlighted throughout the survey instrument, always check that your responses are relevant to that specific course.

When completing an eVALU8 survey, the response categories will always be from left to right (Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, Strongly Agree and Unable to judge). All five response categories are labelled in eVALU8 surveys.

If you make a mistake, email studentfeedback@usc.edu.au as soon as possible, include: details of the course evaluated, your student email address and contact telephone number. You will be contacted with advice.

When are eVALU8 results released to Course Coordinators?

eVALU8 results are released to the Course Coordinator after the official release of student grades for the related teaching period.

The eVALU8 results reports include aggregated quantitative results and students’ raw qualitative (written) responses.

What type of questions are asked in an eVALU8 survey?

eVALU8 surveys consists of two multiple-choice background information questions, seven Likert-style (quantitative) questions and space to type written comments. The aggregated quantitative results and the written comments you provide will be included in the results report provided to the Course Coordinator after the official release of student grades.

You are reminded to be thoughtful, respectful, and constructive in your comments so that they can inform future course/teaching improvements. Comments about personal traits or attributes of course team members are not relevant or appropriate and may breach USC's Student Conduct – Governing Policy.

Heads of School are required to report breaches of USC’s Student Conduct – Governing Policy. Breaches will be dealt with as per policy.

Can I include written comments in an eVALU8 survey?

Yes, space is provided for you to type your written comments. There is no text limit. You can type as much feedback as you like about each course. The written comments that you provide in eVALU8 will be included in the results report provided to the Course Coordinator after the official release of student grades.

You are reminded to be thoughtful, respectful, and constructive in your comments so that they can inform future course/teaching improvements. Comments about personal traits or attributes of course team members are not relevant or appropriate and may breach USC's Student Conduct – Governing Policy.

How are eVALU8 survey results used?

The feedback collected through the eVALU8 survey process is used to improve students’ experience of teaching and learning at the University, assure the University and external bodies of the quality and intended outcomes of its courses and encourage staff to engage in the scholarship of teaching to enhance student learning.

Are eVALU8 surveys compulsory?
While participation in the eVALU8 survey process is voluntary, you are strongly encouraged to participate. The greater the number of students who participate, the more robust and useful the results will be.

Are incentives offered for completing eVALU8 surveys?

Yes, by completing and submitting an eVALU8 survey by the closing date you are automatically entered into the eVALU8 random prize draw. For full details refer to the prize terms and conditions.

How will I know if I’ve won a prize?

If you’re selected in the random draw for a prize, you will be notified by an email to your USC student email account. You will need to respond to the email and advise your name and postal address for the prize to be sent to you.

If any prize winner cannot be contacted within fourteen days of a prize draw or does not confirm the address to which a prize should be forwarded by the date requested, a redraw will be held for that prize (refer to prize terms and conditions).

So, make sure you keep an eye on your student email account after the eVALU8 evaluation period is over!
