Geoff Shadforth Memorial Engineering PhD Scholarship

Breadcrumbs

Applications are invited for this opportunity which will remain open until the position is filled

The University of the Sunshine Coast is offering a scholarship supported by the Shadforth family, to a PhD candidate to conduct research into the beneficiation of natural and existing road making materials to develop superior materials and methods for infrastructure through pavement construction

Thanks to the very generous support of the Shadforth Family, an exciting PhD scholarship opportunity is available at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The Shadforth family support this scholarship in the name of the late Geoff Shadforth, who was a progressive and dedicated engineer in the Construction Industry.

Geoff was an enthusiast in the cause of improving natural road making materials to produce a “better way of doing things” and this passion caused the family company to build an enterprise around the in situ stabilisation of soils.

The University of the Sunshine Coast wants to capture that passion and guide an outstanding student to study the beneficiation of natural and existing road making materials to develop superior materials and methods for infrastructure through pavement construction. A student in this area will be expected to work with both academe and the construction industry to complete a project that addresses some of the following areas:

  • Understand what has worked in the past and revisit new methodologies to investigate current and new practice
  • Examine the incorporation of waste materials to road making materials
    • Black soil with high swell / shrink behaviour
    • Recycled asphalt product
    • Recycled concrete product
    • Recycled building waste
  • The mechanism and mode of failure of stabilised materials under real traffic conditions
  • New and innovative methods and materials for in situ stabilisation of road making materials
