Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids in Honey PhD Scholarship

The project will conduct a mass screening of Australian Honeys for Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids and advise the industry on matters pertaining to Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids contamination, and to which honey types that are low risk or higher risk.

This project will develop NATA validated high throughput analytical methods for testing PAs in Australian honeys. This will allow exporters access to a facility to certify the Australian products meets National and International standards. The mass screening of Australian honey types will also assure International importers that the Australian product is clean. Ultimately, using analytical techniques developed from this project will improve PAs-related health hazards and help industries to gain more confidence from their customers.

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:
  • Domestic student at USC
  • Bachelors Degree with First Class Honours or equivalent previous study, relevant work experience, research publications, or other research experience
  • Maintain satisfactory progress
  • Not hold an equivalent qualification to the one currently being applied for
  • Not have previously held a Commonwealth-funded postgraduate research scholarship unless it was terminated within six months of the current scholarship’s payments commencing
  • Not be the recipient of an equivalent award, scholarship, or salary, providing a benefit greater than 75 percent of the RTP rate to undertake a HDR. Income unrelated to the course of study is not to be taken into account.

  • Alignment of the proposed research to one of USC’s areas of research concentration
  • Record of research publications
  • Professional research experience
  • Applicants should have an analytical chemistry background and LC-MS experience
