Breadcrumbs

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for persons aged 15–24, who constituted 10% of the population in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries in 2004, but represented 27% of all crash fatalities. In Australia alone, in 2016 youth aged 17-25 years had a fatality rate of 9.0 fatalities/100,000 population, compared to 5.5 fatalities/100,000 population of road users aged 40-64 year.

For this reason, research at USC's Adolescent Risk Research Unit (ARRU) is focused on reducing the mortality rate of adolescents through road safety education and improving situational awareness skills and hazard perception. In-car recordings of participants driving behaviour are used to get a first-hand look at what young drivers experience on the road. While controlled driving simulations are also used to acquire and measure more sensitive information such as a participant’s hazard perception ability.

Current projects

Adolescent Road Safety
  • Situation Awareness

  • Situation Awareness Fast Tracking, including identifying Escape Routes (SAFER)

  • Learning to drive and driving instructions

  • Adolescents at risk

  • The young driver road safety system

  • Driving exposure

  • Driver Emotions

  • Vehicles

  • Occupational risks

  • Sleep

  • Vulnerable road user behaviour

SAFER

The intervention SAFER is all about improving the road safety of the road user by helping them detect and react to many road hazards. Being able to identify escape routes – pre-planned pathways out of trouble – is also critical to road safety.

SAFER-Senior is designed to build and retain safe driving skills in our most experienced drivers. We are currently trialling the SAFER-Senior program.

Older Driver Road Safety
  • Situation Awareness Fast Tracking, including identifying Escape Routes (SAFER) - Senior

Other projects

Road Safety for road users of all ages.

  • Driving courtesy and driving discourtesy
