The Aquaculture group engages in strategic and applied science, to provide knowledge and innovative solutions for the aquaculture industry nationally and internationally. Our multidisciplinary approach aims to support sustainable aquaculture practice.
With strengths in the areas of genetics, reproduction, chemical communication, genomics, proteomics and biotechnology, the group works nationally with the main aquaculture species in Australia, including fish (kingfish, salmon, groupers and tuna), crustaceans (lobsters, prawns), molluscs (pearl oysters and edible oysters) and sea cucumbers. Internationally the aquaculture group works in collaboration with scientists from Israel, Japan, USA, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Madagascar, Mexico, The Philippines, Spain, and Vietnam.
Specific areas of Research include:
Enhancing reproductive performance in captive conditions using hormonal manipulations
Development and implementation of genetic programs using classical and advanced genomic approaches
Development of Monosex culture in crustaceans
Health and disease in aquaculture production systems and waterways
Applications of Omics technologies for improved aquaculture systems
