Dr Ana Bouças

Dr Ana Bouças is the lead researcher for the Molecular Biology laboratory at the Sunshine Coast Mind & Neuroscience – Thompson Institute (SCMN-TI).

Since joining the Thompson Institute in 2018, Ana has been principally involved with the investigation of molecular biomarkers of PTSD, depression and suicidality in ketamine clinical trials. In addition, Ana is also working across other major studies at the Thompson institute including Healthy Brain Ageing and Eating Disorders research programs. As a passionate scientist, her research integrates molecular biology and genetic markers to neuroimaging studies to help better understand the neurobiological underpinnings of mental disorders.

Ana has more than seven years of expertise in genetics, molecular and cellular biology in Endocrinology. As a researcher at the Medical School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil she collaborated across various studies.

Ana completed her PhD in Molecular Endocrinology at the Medical School of the UFRGS, in 2016. As part of her study, she established a DNA/biobank and carried out gene silencing using RNA interference in cell culture. As a master’s student at the Medical School of the UFRGS obtained in 2013, she performed genetic association and gene expression studies.
