Dr Kieran Broome

Dr Kieran Broome joined the USC occupational therapy team in 2009 as a Lecturer. Kieran balances his part-time university appointment with clinical practice and project management. He currently works two days per week in private practice focussed on ageing, chronic disease self-management, musculoskeletal and oedema management, accessible environments, and participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Kieran is highly motivated to provide high quality university teaching, as evidence by student feedback and awards for advancing quality teaching and advancing the student experience. He has a passion for innovative, engaging, captivating and creative teaching and learning. His mission as a university educator is to enable graduates to feel confident and competent in core professional skills that are fundamental to all areas of practice.

He maintains a strong research focus for the university, and embeds this in his teaching and practice. Kieran is the Occupational Therapy Honours Coordinator for the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours), having introduced differentiated Honours pathways for traditional research apprenticeships and occupational therapy innovation projects. He mentors aspiring Honours, Masters research and Doctoral students to develop their research skills and tackle important clinical questions asked by the occupational therapy profession. Combining a varied clinical career (including, but not limited to community health, hospital-based rehabilitation, workplace rehabilitation, aged care, palliative care and prison health) with his prior research in ageing, supportive environments, and transportation, Kieran’s research has diversified in to six main portfolios; professional issues in occupational therapy, ageing and living well, chronic disease, movement therapies for everyday activity, therapeutic occupation (leisure, circus, animal-human interaction), and supporting practitioner research.

Kieran is a strong advocate of practice scholarship and continued professional development through both formal training and reflective practice. He is a registered Occupational Therapist in Queensland. He is also an active member of his professional association, and is currently Chairman of the Queensland Division of Occupational Therapy Australia.
