Dr Trevor Gates is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work the School of Social Sciences.
Trevor was previously an Assistant Professor of Social Work at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. Trevor earned his PhD in Social Work with an interdisciplinary certificate in gender and women's studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where his research explored stigma-related experiences in the workplace for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people in Chicago.
As a social work educator and researcher, Trevor has authored publications on LGBT social justice issues, social work pedagogy, international issues, and other issues impacting historically marginalised communities. As a consultant in the United States, he has provided subject matter expertise and developed wholly online courses for Pearson. For over ten years, he also provided exam item development for the Association of Social Work Boards, an organisation which maintains the social work licensing examinations in the United States and Canada, which test a social worker's competence to practice ethically and safely.
Trevor's current research focus is on social justice issues with LGBT communities, volunteerism, organisational behaviour, and strengths-based practices. Among his current research projects is the investigation and exploration of the impact of workplace friendships on well-being and empowerment at work.
