Sustainable Land Management

Description

This course will explore current land management practices with an emphasis on sustainability. Central to the course will be the theme of the shared responsibility of land managers, scientists, consumers and policy makers to work together to create a sustainable rural environment. Environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable land management will be examined. Biophysical/ environmenntal aspects discussed will include maintaining soil productivity, soil health and soil fertility; technologies for pest and weed control; delivery of ecosystem services and maintaining biodiversity on farms, plantation forestry, farm forestry and water conservation technology. Economic arrea to be covered will focus on markets, for example' clean and green' marketing and niche markets. Social dimensions examined include policy impacts on sustainable land management and the human cost of environmental degradation.
