Advanced Instrumental Techniques
SCI 302 (Offering: 2003)

Description

The course provides students with employment ready analytical instrumentation and laboratory skills. Competency in planning and executing analysis of biological and environmental samples using advanced instrumentation are covered. Specific emphasis is placed on valid sampling, data integrity and instrument operation. Consideration will be given to the planning of sampling protocols that will produce representative and valid results. The appropriate methods for the preparation of instrument ready solutions given sample type, possible interferences, instrument requirements and data integrity are given. The theory of various advanced instrument maintenance and troubleshooting are covered. The techniques and instrumentation to be examined includes Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, SDS-Page, Western Blotting and Microscopy.
