SCS 280 (Offering: 2003)

Description

Modern society poses many political, economic, social and personal challenges, and an increasing number of individuals and families find themselves in crisis. Counselling is a process where one person allows another, often a professional, to help in the journey of life. It draws on psychology and psychotherapy as the basis for theories and techniques. This course introduces students to the nature of counselling and how it can be utilised as a process of empowerment for individuals and their families. It explores the different psychological theories of personality forming the framework for counselling practice. Students also explore various counselling approaches and develop skills in counselling. Examining methods of counselling for diverse client groups provides a sound understanding of appropriate counselling approaches.
