Start Online & Save (SOS) Scholarships FAQs - Commencing international students

Commencing international students can find frequently asked questions about the Start Online & Save (SOS) Scholarship on this page.

What is the Start Online & Save (SOS) Scholarship?

The Start Online and Save (SOS) Scholarship allows you to initially commence your studies online at USC with a 50% tuition fee reduction if you are currently outside Australia.

The 50% tuition fee reduction will apply to the officially scheduled and published tuition fees to all students who are offshore and enrolled in a teaching period with a census date prior to 31 December 2022. It cannot be used in conjunction with any other scholarship at the same time.

After the SOS Scholarship ends, will any other scholarships be available?

Once you arrive in Australia, or after the SOS Scholarship ceases, you will be eligible for the International Student Outlook (ISO) Scholarship. The ISO Scholarship is available for all USC programs commencing in 2021 or 2022. A 15% tuition fee reduction will apply to the officially scheduled and published tuition fees for the relevant program and study period.

Who is eligible for the SOS Scholarship?

The SOS Scholarship will apply to commencing international students who:

  • accept an offer for a USC program with the intention to study on campus*; and
  • intend to hold a Student visa; and
  • initially commence their program offshore and online; and
  • are enrolled in a teaching period with a census date prior to 31 December 2022.

* Not all USC programs offer online course delivery.

How is the SOS Scholarship calculated?

The 50% tuition fee reduction will apply to each course you are enrolled in based on the officially scheduled and published tuition fees.

Do I have to enrol full time to receive the SOS Scholarship?

No. However, if you are not following the study sequence for your program, any under-enrolment is likely to affect your progression and will extend the duration of your studies.

You should check your program page and study sequence to ensure you understand what courses you are required to enrol in for each teaching period to complete your program within the registered duration. For assistance on planning your studies, refer to Managing your progression.

If you already hold a Student visa and do not enrol full time, you will likely need to extend your Student visa and cover the associated costs. You should review the While you are Studying information, in particular the information regarding changes to study load.

How do I apply for the SOS scholarship?

You do not need to apply for the SOS scholarship. If you are eligible for the SOS Scholarship this will be included in your Letter of Offer and associated information.

When does the SOS Scholarship end?

The SOS Scholarship will end once you arrive in Australia, or after the last teaching period with a census date prior to 31 December 2022, whichever comes first.

Once you arrive in Australia, or after the SOS Scholarship ceases, you will be eligible for the International Student Outlook (ISO) Scholarship. The ISO Scholarship is available for all USC programs commencing in 2021 and 2022. A 15% tuition fee reduction will apply to the officially scheduled and published tuition fees for the relevant program and study period.

Will there be any additional discounts on top of the SOS Scholarship?

No. While the SOS scholarship is applied, it cannot be used in conjunction with any other international tuition fee reduction at the same time.

Will the SOS Scholarship apply to all USC programs?

No. Not all USC programs are available for online study. The SOS Scholarship will be applied if you are enrolled in one of the programs listed as available for online study or the International Office approves the program (case by case).

Will I be eligible for the SOS Scholarship if I am in Australia?

Will the SOS Scholarship apply if I defer my intake?

The SOS Scholarship will apply if you are studying online and outside Australia in a teaching period with a census date after 30 June 2021 and prior 31 December 2022. If you defer your studies to commence in a teaching period that falls within these dates, the SOS Scholarship will apply. However, if you defer your studies to start in a teaching period with a census date after 31 December 2022, you will no longer be eligible for the SOS Scholarship.

What happens if my Student visa is refused?

If you receive a Student visa refusal and are enrolled in a program that can be completed online, you can complete your program outside Australia. However, the SOS Scholarship will not apply to any enrolment in a teaching period with a census date after 31 December 2022.

After the SOS Scholarship ceases, you will be eligible for the International Student Outlook (ISO) Scholarship. The ISO Scholarship is available for all USC programs commencing in 2021 and 2022. A 15% tuition fee reduction will apply to the officially scheduled and published tuition fees for the relevant program and study period.
