Research Training Program Scholarship (RTP)

The Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship was established by the Australian Commonwealth Government to support high achieving domestic and international students undertaking Research Doctorate and Research Master degrees.

Applications are especially encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and those from diverse gender identities for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) discipline areas

All domestic students, upon being offered unconditional offer to undertake a higher degree by research course at an Australian university, will be offered an RTP Fees Offset Scholarship. Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarships are only awarded to students of exceptional research potential.

As per the Guidelines, International Scholarships may only be awarded to students undertaking research in an area identified by USC as a research concentration. Further detail on USC's Research Centres and Clusters is available at Research and innovation.

Eligibility
You must:
  • To be eligible for a RTP Stipend, RTP Fees Offset or RTP Allowance a student must be a domestic student or an overseas student accepted or enrolled in an accredited HDR course of study at USC.
  • Not have an equivalent qualification to the one for which they are currently applying
  • To be eligible for a RTP Stipend a student must not be receiving income from another source to support that student’s general living costs while undertaking their HDR if that income is greater than 75 per cent of that student’s RTP Stipend rate. Income unrelated to the student’s HDR or income received for the student’s course of study but not for the purposes of supporting general living costs is not to be taken into account.
  • To be eligible to receive a RTP Fees Offset Scholarship, a student must not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR tuition fees.
Selection criteria
Recipients for RTP Scholarships will be selected in order of merit on the following criteria:
  • Academic qualifications; and
  • Alignment of the proposed research to one of USC's areas of research concentration; and
  • Record of research publications or non-traditional research outputs; and
  • Professional Research Experience; and
  • Preference is given to applicants who have completed a Bachelor Honours Degree with minimum Class 1, or who are regarded by USC as having an equivalent level of attainment via previous study, relevant work experience, research strength, research publications and other research experience.
