Workplace mental health training

Increase your staff’s capability to give mental health support to others

Our training is delivered by the Thompson Institute's expert educators, in collaboration with researchers and clinicians at the forefront of mental health and brain health science. 

The neuroscience of trauma

More than half of Australians will experience a traumatic event in their lifetime and stress disorders are now the most common mental illness in Australia. Learn about how trauma can impact the brain and the neuroscience of disorders such as PTSD. This training increases knowledge and shifts paradigms.

Who should attend: Workforces who support the wellbeing of people who have experienced a traumatic event, for instance healthcare workers, frontline workers, first responders, social workers, educators, mental health professionals, and people working in family support services, defence forces, veteran support, emergency housing, and domestic violence support. 

Communicating with emotionally distressed people

This workshop will upskill you to support people in distress. It covers essential skills such as active listening. Participants will be shown how to validate distress, while keeping safe boundaries. A pre-webinar meeting with the presenter will identify any issues which will be addressed in the workshop, with time for questions and answers.

Trauma informed care training

Join our expert facilitators as they explore traumatic stress and its wide-reaching impacts. Trauma Informed Care is gaining increasing attention as a best-practice approach to improving wellbeing outcomes. It starts with the assumption that every individual could potentially be affected by trauma, and provides a framework for recognising signs of trauma and responding in a way that facilitates recovery and avoids re-traumatisation. 

  • Half-day and full-day options 

  • Up to 30 attendees in each workshop

  • Half-day option: Increase trauma-informed care knowledge and understanding 

  • Full-day option: Increase knowledge plus gain skills to apply that knowledge in the workplace

You will learn about: 
  • The signs and symptoms of trauma  

  • The neurobiology of trauma  

  • The impact of traumatic events, including lived experiences

  • Practical skills to care for people impacted by traumatic events 

  • The cost of caring, including vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue 

 

Who should attend:

The full day training provides is best suited to people who work directly with patients/clients/colleagues who may be impacted by trauma to support their recovery or wellbeing.

The half-day training is suitable for people who wish to increase their trauma-informed care knowledge and awareness, Medical and health professionals, mental health and welfare workers, aged care or disability support employees, first responders and health emergency workers, intake teams, educators, youth workers, family support workers, veteran support service workers, public service personnel, anyone supporting the recovery or wellbeing of people impacted by traumatic events. 

Suicide prevention training

This evidence-based LivingWorks training will empower your workforce to identify and help people at risk of suicide. These powerful workshops prepare your organisation to play a role in suicide prevention, building a powerful safety network for your team members and those they support.

  • Suitable for any adult who is not experiencing suicide bereavement 

safeTALK suicide alertness half-day workshop 

Your people will learn: 

  • Simple yet effective TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe 

  • The circumstances and/or signs that indicate that a person may be at risk of suicide 

  • How to raise the topic of suicide with someone they are concerned about 

  • How to connect that person to resources that can help them stay safe 

  • Min 10, max 30 attendees per workshop 

ASIST suicide intervention full-day workshop 

Your people will gain skills to: 

  • Intervene with someone at risk of suicide 

  • Work with that person to help them feel less overwhelmed and suicidal 

  • Create a safety plan with the person to reduce the danger of suicide in the future 

  • Min 15, max 30 attendees per workshop 

Suicide prevention training to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is also available upon request.
