Program Overview

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is designed to equip graduates with the essential skills and competancies in management and business administration that are essential for those who aspire to reach the top of their profession.

The MBA, consisting of 12 courses, is built from the four-course Graduate Certificate in Business Administration and the eight-course Graduate Diploma of Business Administration resulting in a comprehensive qualification.

Course in the MBA cover accounting, economics, management, finance, law and marketing. Many of these courses in the MBA incorporate case studies of problems encountered in your workplaces and industries.

Entry Requirements

A Bachelor's degree from a recognised higher education institution and a minimum of three years' work experience are the requirements for entering the Master of Business Administration program.

Applications are also invited from candidates who do not have a degree, but who have work experience at or approaching managerial level for six years or more. These applications will receive special consideration from the Dean of Business, who has the discretion to waive the educational requirement if it is considered the candidate is likely to be successful at postgraduate study and would benefit from the program.

Advanced Standing

Students with an Undergraduate Degree

No advanced standing will be granted to students with an undergraduate qualification, however, substitution will be permitted in certain circumstances.

Students who have completed two or more courses on a single topic can substitute that same MBA course for another. For example, if a student has completed a major in Accounting, they can replace Accounting for Managers with a course from the Master of Financial Planning or similar.

Students with Postgraduate qualifications

Students who have completed postgraduate subjects elsewhere may apply for one course of advanced standing up to a maximum of 50% for the Master of Business Administration, Graduate Certificate in Business Administration and the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration. The content of the courses would need to overlap the University of the Sunshine Coast course content by least 70%. A maximum of two courses that do not meet this criteria can be granted as electives whilst one may be granted towards the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.

Students who have completed a Graduate Certificate in a specialised or technical area may be granted advanced standing in the MBA against the following subjects:

  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Research Methods for Managers
  • Managerial Project (two courses) or two electives.

Students that have completed a Graduate Diploma in a specialised or technical area, may receive advanced standing for the above four courses, plus another two advanced standing courses may be granted for courses completed closely aligned with courses offered at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Alternately, students can substitute the four above with other similar courses to the University of the Sunshine Coast. A maximum of six courses of advanced standing will be granted.

Only students who have completed a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration at another recognised higher education institution will be eligible for eight courses of advanced standing.
