Brendon Munge

Mr Brendon Munge FHEA is an Associate Lecturer in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) / Bachelor of Recreation and Outdoor Environmental Studies, and the Bachelor of Recreation and Outdoor Environmental Studies. Brendon is also the Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Recreation and Outdoor Environmental Studies and the Diploma of Outdoor Environmental Studies.

The primary focus of Brendon's teaching has been on foundational knowledge and experience for new students in outdoor and environmental studies. However, he also has a significant component of his work linked to utilising expeditions, particularly bushwalking, to engage in outdoor education learning.

Brendon has recently been awarded Higher Education Academy Fellowship for his scholarship of teaching with evidence-informed practice, recognising the depth of scholarly knowledge, experience and skill as an educator.

Brendon has previously won three teaching and learning excellence awards focusing on student engagement and learning.

Brendon builds on his teaching focus through opportunities to internationalise the students' experience. He has successfully secured Federal Government funding aligned with the New Colombo Project. He has subsequently taken multiple groups to Singapore for an immersive outdoor learning program focused on utilising urban areas for outdoor learning.

Brendon has a breadth of research focus areas aligned with developing the outdoor education profession. Past research has focused on fieldwork pedagogies in higher education, with research publications linked to best practices in fieldwork and innovative technology uses in fieldwork applications. He is currently working on collaborative research aligned with the following: 

  • Near peer teaching in Outdoor and Environmental Education
  • Assessing threshold concept in Outdoor Education
  • Outdoor Educators as Occupational Athletes
  • Dietary requirements and implications for journey based outdoor education

Brendon is also working with his colleague, Dr Glyn Thomas, on a UniSC Undergraduate Fellowship Project focused on people’s perceptions of the environment aligned with their recreational pursuits
