Common words and acronyms

The Macquarie Dictionary is the University's default reference for spelling.

A

  • Aboriginal — adjective, upper case in all uses of the word
  • adviser — not advisor, but advisory
  • affect — affect is the verb, to act upon or influence
  • after — not subsequently, following
  • AHEGS — Australian Higher Eduction Graduation Statement
  • ALTC — Australian Learning and Teaching Council
  • alternative entry — use instead of mature-age
  • am — no punctuation and no space between the time and 'am'
  • application form — lower case
  • AQF — Australian Qualifications Framework
  • ARC — Australian Research Council
  • Associate Professor — do not abbreviate, use Dr after the first reference of Associate Professor

B

  • Bachelor — degree (capitalise for specific degree reference)
  • bachelor’s degree — not bachelors, bachelor degree courses (use lower case for generic reference)
  • barbecue — not barbeque, preferred instead of BBQ
  • before — not prior to, ahead of
  • benefited — not benefitted

  • OP — Overall Position, stands on its own, not OP score
  • OP ineligible — no hyphen

P

  • paediatric — retain digraph
  • part-time — hyphenate adjective (ie part-time study)
  • part time — noun, two words, no hyphen (ie to study part time)
  • percent — one word, do not use symbol (%) unless in a table
  • PhD — do not punctuate as Ph.D
  • pm — no punctuation and no space between the time and 'pm'
  • PO Box — capitalise
  • postgraduate — one word
  • practice — noun: I do a lot of practice. Both doctors and lawyers have practices.
  • practise — verb: I practise a lot. A doctor practises medicine.

  • Professor — never abbreviate to Prof.
