Graduation day

Breadcrumbs

What to wear

Graduation is a formal occasion so we encourage you to dress accordingly. Don't be caught out thinking your outfit won't be seen - your graduation robe will be open at the front, so what you wear underneath will be noticed. The dress code is business attire which means you should dress as though you were going to a job interview. Here are some tricks to making sure you look good, feel comfortable and are ready to celebrate on the day.

Men

A long sleeved business shirt with a tie and dress pants will look great. Make sure the shirt fits well and avoid lightweight fabric and open-necked shirts as the weight of the hood will pull the fabric up at the front.

Wearing a jacket under the academic gown can be hot and bulky and is not recommended.

Women

Tailored, well-fitting tops and dresses are ideal. Dresses and skirts both look great but remember that you'll be up on the stage so consider the length carefully. Dressy or work-wear style pants are also a good option.

Dress shoes are ideal. Choose something that you'll be comfortable in as you will be walking across the stage and may need to stand for longer periods of time. Make sure you can walk confidently and remember that the stage surface might be a little slippery. Don't let this be you!

Hair

Your trencher fits firmly over your head so avoid hairstyles or accessories that will interfere with this. Hat hair is pretty standard for graduation day... but don't worry you get to keep your trencher so you can wear it home!

Your guide to graduation day

To help everything go smoothly and to ensure you enjoy the day, here is the rundown on what will happen plus some helpful information so you know exactly what to expect.

1. Arrive at least one hour before the ceremony starts

You must arrive at least one hour prior to your ceremony starting, to allow enough time to register, collect academic dress and attend the graduand briefing. Registration opens 90 minutes prior to the ceremony commencing.

2. Register on arrival

Please register as soon as you arrive. At this time you’ll be given your seat number and you'll collect your academic dress. Please ask your guests to wait away from the registration area – you can join them once you’ve processed through registration.

3. Collect academic dress

Your specific academic dress has been reserved for you following your registration. Reed Graduation staff will correctly fit your academic dress.

4. Professional photography

Reed Graduation will be available to take professional photos before and after the ceremony. You can have photos taken with your friends and family and perhaps even some of your favourite lecturers and tutors.

5. Attend the graduand briefing

The graduand briefing will take place 30 minutes before the ceremony starts. Don't miss it! This is where you'll be given instructions on what you need to do when you cross the stage and any questions you might have can be answered.

6. Guests are asked to be seated

Guest seating is not allocated so it’s best that your family and friends find seats early as many graduation ceremonies will be at capacity. If your guests are bringing a baby pram or stroller please email majorevents@usc.edu.au to let us know so we can provide directions to best access for prams.

7. Graduand entrance procession

Ten minutes before the ceremony begins, you'll enter the room with the other granduands and take your seat. It's important that you sit in your allocated seat. Any personal items you have with you will need to be tucked under your seat when you cross the stage.

8. During the ceremony

You will be ushered backstage row by row to prepare to cross the stage. Staff will be in attendance to assist with straightening your hood and will tell you where to stand until your name is called.

When your name is called you’ll walk across the stage and be awarded your degree. Remember to smile and enjoy the moment! The ceremony is videotaped and your family and friends will no doubt be taking lots of photos.

Once you’ve received your degree you’ll walk to the other side of the stage to the backstage area where staff will hand you your official paperwork. You’ll then return to your seat for the remainder of the ceremony.

9. After the ceremony

Once the ceremony concludes you will join the official Academic Recession and march out of the theatre. Your guests will remain in their seats during the recession.

Official photographs will still be available after the ceremony.

10. Return your academic dress

Your academic dress needs to be returned within one hour of the conclusion of the ceremony. Fees will be charged for late returns or missing items. Your trencher is yours to keep as a memento of graduation day.
