Forestry in a nature-positive economy: Meet the panel, Dr Alexandra Catling

Fresh voices matter! At the upcoming UniSC Forest Research Institute public lecture — Forestry in a Nature-Positive Economy — Dr Alexandra “Alex" Catling steps into that spotlight on the panel, as an early-career researcher in the Tropical Forests and People team, bringing her experience in field ecology, plant interactions and the effects of environmental change.

Alongside her work on drought and thermal tolerance in both glasshouse and field settings, Alex has been a key contributor to Project Tarsier in the Philippines — a community-based reforestation initiative designed to meet global carbon storage goals. In a recent presentation on health, safety, security and environmental risk mitigation in reforestation-for-carbon projects, Alex highlighted the need to ensure that such initiatives are not only effective for the climate, but also ethical and equitable for the people undertaking them.

Hear Alex add the perspective of science in motion — where experiments, ecology and community intersect — as she joins other panelists at UniSC’s Moreton Bay campus on October 15 to explore what a nature-positive future for forestry really looks like.

Bio:

Dr Alexandra Catling joined the Tropical Forests and People Research Centre as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2023. Her PhD at the University of Queensland focused on demographic responses to plant-plant interactions along resource gradients in natural Australia systems. Her core research interest is understanding the impacts of environmental change on plant communities.

She has experience researching drought and thermal tolerance in glasshouse and field settings, including monitoring growth of Eucalyptus trees across lutruwita/Tasmania and population growth rates of annual plants in Western Australia.

We invite you to join the Forest Research Institute, key speaker Dr David Brand, plus an expert panel, to discuss 'Forestry in a nature-positive economy.' Hosted at UniSC's Moreton Bay campus, this free event will be an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues in industry, government, research and academia working towards nature-positive solutions in the forestry sector.
