Collaboration with NGOs for SDGs. Collaborate with NGOs to tackle the SDGs through: student volunteering programmes, research programmes, or development of educational resources
UniSC collaborates extensively with NGOs to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through student volunteering, research programs, and the development of educational resources.
One standout example is the Empowering Communities Through Seaweed project in Samoa, where UniSC researchers partnered with local NGOs to co-create a seaweed recipe book and educational materials. This initiative involved students in both research and resource development, promoting sustainable food practices and contributing to SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 14 (Life Below Water).
Through the Pacific Agriculture Scholarships, Support and Climate Resilience Program (PASS–CR), UniSC collaborates with NGOs and institutions across Pacific Island nations. This program supports student researchers and scholars in addressing food security and climate resilience, contributing to SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2, and 13 (Climate Action). Students engage in fieldwork and data collection, gaining hands-on experience in international development and sustainability.
UniSC also participated in the Queensland Government Youth Research Grants, which funded 12 youth-led projects aligned with the SDGs. These projects included partnerships with NGOs and community groups, focusing on climate action, sustainable communities, and mental health. Students explored topics such as seaweed restoration, sustainable consumer behavior, and citizen science, contributing to SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 13.
Additionally, UniSC’s Sustainability Research Cluster works with NGOs on transdisciplinary projects addressing environmental justice, community resilience, and climate adaptation. These collaborations often result in co-designed educational resources and community engagement strategies that support SDGs 10 (Reduced Inequalities), 13, and 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
Summary
UniSC works closely with NGOs to advance the SDGs through hands-on student volunteering, collaborative research programs, and co-designed educational resources, empowering communities, building capacity, and promoting sustainable development across local and international contexts.
