Dr Nicole Flemming is a Lecturer in Biomedical Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where she teaches across first- and second-year physiology and pathophysiology and contributes to high-quality curriculum design and delivery. She completed her PhD at the University of Queensland in 2021, focusing on mitochondrial dysfunction as a pathological contributor to diabetic kidney disease.
Prior to joining UniSC, Dr Flemming held a Lecturer in Medical Education role within Griffith University’s Doctor of Medicine program, where she coordinated postgraduate courses and developed learning activities in physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical medicine. She has extensive experience in course design, academic administration, learning and assessment management, and student support.
Dr Flemming conducts her research at the Sunshine Coast Health Institute (SCHI), where she is establishing pre-clinical and clinical projects centred on diabetes, kidney disease, cell culture and organoid models of disease, and biomarkers of ageing and disease. Her current research includes developing cell culture and organoid platforms at SCHI to investigate the pathological impact of glycaemic variability in diabetes.
Dr Flemming is actively involved in postgraduate student supervision, serving as principal supervisor for Honours students and associate supervisor for PhD candidates. She also contributes to professional service as an Editorial Board Member for Frontiers in Endocrinology, a peer reviewer for Frontiers in Endocrinology and Frontiers in Nephrology, and as a member of working groups and mentoring initiatives that support teaching innovation, academic integrity, and professional development at UniSC and SCHI.

Research areas
- diabetes
- kidney physiology
- chronic kidney disease
- acute kidney injury
- mitochondrial dysfunction
Dr Flemming's specialist areas of knowledge include kidney physiology, diabetes, mitochondrial dysfunction, and healthy aging. In particular, she studies the role of cellular energetics and cellular injury using metabolic and biochemical assays, to understand the underlying pathophysiology of disease.
