Undergraduate work placements
As part of their course requirements, all undergraduate engineering students are required to complete at least 12 weeks (60 working days) of Engineering Professional Practice. This experience can be gained through vacation employment or part-time/casual work undertaken alongside their studies.
Students are responsible for organising their placements directly with host organisations. However, the School maintains a list of companies open to hosting students.

Fourth-year Engineering projects
Fourth-year engineering courses (ENG401 and ENG402) are capstone projects that showcase students’ professional-level research and design capabilities through an approved project.
Working closely with academic supervisors or industry partners, students plan and execute a research or design project aligned with their area of interest. These projects often focus on delivering sustainable solutions or creating positive community impact. Depending on the project scope, activities may include computational analysis, laboratory experiments, design development, or site-based investigations. All projects aim to solve complex engineering challenges.

Guest lectures/site visits
Throughout their studies, Engineering students benefit from site visits and guest lectures delivered by industry professionals. In particular, ENG101, a first-year course offered in Trimester 1, provides an early introduction to the engineering profession through these valuable industry engagements.

Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Internships
UniSC partners with industry to offer three-month internships for PhD candidates, ideally within the first 18 months of their candidature. Host organisations define a series of projects that address real-world industry challenges and are aligned with their business needs. Each project should present a research question suitable for a PhD candidate to explore over 60 full-time working days.
PhD candidates receive a stipend of at least $3,000 per month for the duration of the internship, funded by the host organisation. These internships provide candidates with valuable experience applying their research skills in an industry setting, while delivering meaningful outcomes and insights for the host.
