Amy Strachan

Dr Amy Strachan is lecturer in pedagogy and curriculum at UniSC.

Amy was a primary teacher for over 12 years (from 2003 to 2015, working in a range of school settings in England, Japan and The Gambia. Within this time, she worked as a generalist, a specialist science teacher and a curriculum lead. Amy then moved to St Mary’s University, London, where she worked as a senior lecturer in Primary Science Education for over eight years. Alongside her lecturing role, Amy became a lead facilitator of professional development, supporting science leads to develop quality primary science provision within their classrooms.

Amy is passionate about global learning and global citizenship education, the area in which her EdD research focused on through the primary science education lens. This led to her award-winning teacher resource, ‘Saving The Planet One Science Lesson At A Time’, published by Millgate House. Along with her other published texts, including co-authored ‘The Really Useful Science Book’ for Routledge, and ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ for Primary Science Teachers Trust, Amy continues to write resources for primary science educators.

Amy has also recently worked with The Department of Education and the Natural History Museum in England on a national education programme to support the development of the climate education and sustainability curriculum. She also worked with colleagues from UCL, becoming an accredited trainer in primary science capital, supporting equity and social justice in primary science. Along with research in global learning and global citizenship education, Amy’s academic research continues to focus on these areas in relation to curriculum, policy and pedagogy, underpinned by her core values of interdependence, social justice and equity. She is particularly interested in the importance of teacher agency within these areas of learning.
