Society for Mental Health Research 2018 conference

Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience Thompson Institute researchers will be attending the 40th Annual Society for Mental Health Research conference from 28-30 November 2018 in Noosa, Australia.

SMHR is the peak body of mental health research in Australia and New Zealand. SMHR's annual conferences provide an opportunity for researchers from a range of fields to come together and collaborate to share current research ideas and benefit those with mental ill-health.

Hosted by the Thompson Institute, SMHR2018 conference is the first to ever be held in a regional area. Talks will be presented on eMental Health, the links between physical health and mental health, brain imaging, suicide prevention, trauma, translating research to practice, and mood disorders.

Thompson Institute researchers will be presenting papers on cyberbulling, mapping brain development using imaging techniques, and depression and suicidality following sport-related concussion in young people respectively.

Young people will also be participating at the conference in the Frontiers for Young Minds Live Review: Special Plenary Session at SMHR2018. In a collaborative partnership the Thompson Institute, SMHR2018, Frontiers for Young Minds (FYM) and Matthew Flinders Anglican College have come together to provide eleven Grade 9 students the opportunity to engage with real world science.

The FYM Live Review is a first for SMHR and the second ever FYM Live Review to be conducted at conference. The session will see five researchers present their papers for review by a live panel of young reviewers. The young reviewers will ask questions and provide feedback to the researchers. In the lead up to the Live Review, the young reviewers have been working with Science Mentors from the Thompson Institute to learn about the scientific process and science communication.

The papers presented will be on topics including surf therapy, brain stimulation, mindfulness, the physics of MRI, and exercise and mental health. If the papers are accepted by the young reviews, they will be placed into an eBook collection titled "Different ways to help those with mental illness". The first collection for FYM on the topic of mental health.
