High Performance Student Athlete Eligibility Classification for Sports

Athlete Eligibility Criteria for High Performance Student Athlete Program

Surf Lifesaving

Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Selected to represent Australia in international competitions in an open or age group event within 12 months of application
  • Qualified to compete in a final at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships in an open or age group event within 12 months of application
Tier 3
  • Must place in the top 3 in a State Championships within 12 months of application

Note: IRB events are not eligible

Equestrian

Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Current member of an Equestrian Australia (EA) high performance/ recognition squad, or the the EA National Young rider elite squad etc. Refer EA: https://www.equestrian.org.au/NationalSquads
Tier 3
  • Current member of an Equestrian Queensland (EQ) high performance/ recognition squad (e.g. EQ Young Riders Dressage Squad). Refer EQ: https://www.qld.equestrian.org.au/dressage/squads
  • Actively competing at EQ/EA affiliated squad qualifying competitions including state, national and international recognised competitions (including CDIs)
  • Actively competing and achieving high level results in Pony Club State and National events

Touch football

Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Open or age-group men's women's and mixed level for Queensland State of Origin, NRL Touch Premiership, or Australian Emus (Trans-Tasman or World Cup)
  • National Youth Championships, under 20's men's, women's or mixed state of origin, under 18's men's, women's or Mixed Australian Team
Tier 3
  • Open or age group men's, women's or mixed for National Touch League (NTL)

Waterskiing

Tier 1 and Tier 2

Actively competing in one of the following events:

  • World Championships or Under 21 World Championships
  • Asian Australasian Challenge (International event between all Asian and Oceania countries)
  • World Unisport Games
  • Moomba Masters
  • Australia vs New Zealand Challenge
Tier 3
  • Qualification into national level events

Motor sports

Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Invitation to participate in AIS sponsored performance camps
  • Selected to represent Australia in international competitions in an open or age group event 
  • Qualified to compete in a final at the National Championships in an open or age group event 
Tier 3
  • Top 3 in state level endorsed competitions

Sailing

Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Olympic classes (laser, 470)
    • Recognised by Queensland Academy of Sport or Australian Sailing Team 
    • Top 3 at QAS and AIS recognised regattas
  • Match Racing (America's Cup, world match racing tour)
    • Grade 1, 2 and 3 events
    •  Grade 4 and 5 as emerging
    • World ranked athletes
  • Offshore sailing and yachting (Sydney to Hobart, Volvo Ocean race)
    • Consider athletes' background in the sport, their results, the prestige of events they do and which teams they do compete for (can be difficult category to classify)
Tier 3 
  • Olympic classes (laser, 470)
    • Place 3-5 at QAS and AIS recognised regattas
  • Match Racing (America's Cup, world match racing tour)
    • Grade 4 and 5 as emerging

Triathlon

Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Represent state or country in open or age group national or international classified events- minimum of three per year
Tier 3
  • Top 15 in Triathlon Australia endorsed events at state and national level

weightlifting 

Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Represent Australia in open or age group international competitions
  • Represent Queensland in open or age group international competitions
Tier 3
  • Must podium at state championships
